Little ideas for a big city
Re: Little ideas for a big city
What about commissioning artwork for prominent blank walls around the city. Maybe an annual national uni art comp? Wouldnt have to pay those guys much, just some 2 minute noodles.

Re: Little ideas for a big city
I agree completely, but I can see the OH&S "Nazis" (to borrow a tabloid term) blowing the costs of such projects out into six figures and beyond. Uni students only need a stack of milk crates and a bike helmet, not any of this scaffolding and tether mumbo-jumbo.
But if you wear an orange vest, nothing bad could possibly happen.

I think Gawler Place needs to be redeveloped into a shared zone use such as Leigh Street, with nice streetscaping, paving, bollards etc. We cant make it a mall because of the service access for businesses, but a nice mixed zone European feel will be better than how it is now. Gawler Place has a lot of potential
Re: Little ideas for a big city
I agree with your sentiments but the northern section between North Tce and the Mall would be especially problematic. The old David Jones car park empties onto there but more importantly Woolworth's loading dock is accessed via there. There's often semis queued in Gawler Place waiting to get to the dock.

Re: Little ideas for a big city
I hope this little idea fits the bill for this thread.
Here in Seattle they have a popular radio show devoted to food and cooking. It's hosted by a very well known Seattle chef and runs a full three hours, saturdays 4-7pm. It's fun to listen to and showcases Seattle as an interesting, food loving town. Somehow, being into food seems to be a marker of 'cool' for a city, or so it seems to me.
I know that on 891 ABC Adelaide they have a popular talk back gardening program and since hearing Seattle Kitchen over here, I have often thought a show like it would be a great addition to Adelaide radio. It's clearly rewarding for the people here in Seattle to be able to ring up and get excited about all manner of food happenings in their town and region - you can hear the pride and enthusiasm in their voices. It gives a great impression of Seattle.
As a pretty darn good food town, I think Adelaide could really make something of a concept like this. Anything that cements our reputation and heightens our enthusiasm for the things we do well sounds good to me.
If there is already something along those lines happening on Adelaide radio, I've obviously been away too long and please forgive me

On TV here we have "The Cook & The Chef" with Maggie Beer (of Barossa Valley fame) & Simon Bryant (Adelaide Hilton Hotel Exec Chef). Not quite the same as what you are proposing, and you can't "ring up with a question" but at least they are home grown locals who showcase SA and our produce australia-wide!Queen Anne wrote:I hope this little idea fits the bill for this thread.

You don't need to resort to iView - it's vodcast as well with no geographical restrictions. Lower resolution, but a much faster download as an mp4. It's also available as a WMV.monotonehell wrote:iView is not available outside Australia as far as I know. Dusting off this thread a bit.
Wouldn't it be cool to see this tiny tiny car park just off Rundle Mall paved and surrounded by plants to form a courtyard bar & cafe?

Re: Little ideas for a big city
I was up at Mount Lofty yesterday and I was having a browse in the gift shop. I was horrified to see that the postcards for sale showing skyline and other images of Adelaide were quite old, with some, I suspect due to the lack of certain buildings in the skyline date from the late 70s. The vast majority were from the early to mid 90's and they show 'State Bank' signage on Westpac House.
I think this gives a very bad image of Adelaide, as for some people this could be the very first image they see of our city.
I wonder whether it could be possible for the government to regulate the sale of postcards so that only new images of the city be shown?

Re: Little ideas for a big city
Will I don't think we are THAT insecure as a city to need to legislate such things. A date on the photo's caption would be nice though. I bet postcard manufacturers have a warehouse full of old postcards.

Re: Little ideas for a big city
I think it's more to do with the rights to the photos and the cost of using them. You see it all over the world - even in New York there are still photos of a skyline that includes the Twin Towers. It's just a matter of price.

Cool retro neon signs, please. Colourful lights distract you from the drug-dealers and such.
Re: Little ideas for a big city
What about buying a old H type tram and converting it into the pie cart. Dont know how transporting it would go, maybe put it in a semi permanent position like Hindmarsh sq.
