Like the style of the red brick bldg (with cream trim) in the backgound behind the left crane in the first pic. A bit old manhattan but appealing. LOsing many bldgs of this appearance.

This unique garden's growing - up
Christie Peucker From: Sunday Mail (SA) April 09, 2011 11:30PM

ADELAIDE'S first vertical wall garden will start growing on a city building this week.

The 2 1/2-storey wall of drought-tolerant plants is being created behind an old telephone exchange, off Franklin St, and is aimed at reducing energy consumption, carbon dioxide levels and ambient temperatures in its vicinity. It is hoped the green-wall trial will be so successful it could lead to the retrofit of dozens of city buildings and even vertical gardens up to 40 storeys high.

Native plants will be brought tomorrow from a Macclesfield nursery and inserted into the prototype steel structure attached to the wall, behind the Adelaide GPO.

After the trial, the green wall will be moved permanently to Tower 8, part of the Aspen Group's City Central project, under construction in Franklin St.

Four green-roof trial plots also will be planted on the 21st floor of ANZ House, Waymouth St, for similar trials, before moving to Tower 8.

Landscape architect Graeme Hopkins, who will monitor the green wall with Adelaide University, said City Central would be a hybrid project combining two types of living walls - planter boxes, similar to those at Adelaide Zoo's entrance, and climbing vines. External planter boxes at each floor would provide deep shading and climbing plants would filter light through windows. All would be irrigated by roof rainwater.

"A lot of the other ones around the world are water-intensive systems that won't work in our climate," Mr Hopkins said. "Ours is designed specifically for climate change in the next 10 to 15 years."

He hoped the project would inspire urban planners to create "corridors of green" across the city.

"Once you're talking 20 to 30 floors, there are huge visual impacts so there is a whole urban design approach to this," he said. "The walls will create a 5 per cent reduction in temperature, compared with adjacent building facades.

"So outdoor cafes under green walls are just one of the ways we can make the city more liveable."

I'm quite intrigued by this, and how it will look with an Australian native focus.

The first floor has pretty well reached Franklin street - moving quickly.

Not really a sustitute for a grassy knoll, but could look interesting when they grow a bit more.

Really starting to 'densify' that area now - Franklin revival no less. It would be interesting to plot all the developments occurring over the last 2 years - a shift to the S + SW appears evident . Still my favourite city since 1970..

Another core concrete pour underway.

Good to see the 22 wheel BMF Hanson concrete trucks back in town.
