[COM] Re: South Road Upgrade
Do you think that this underpass would be wide enough to squeeze in 6 lanes in the future? It looks like it could almost fit that many in.
I'm stoked that the top deck is open now because it means two turning lanes when turning left from anzac highway onto south road again, having 1 turning lane has been a nightmare in peak hour.

I have read that additional lanes can be added "later" - beams are similar length to Bakewell U/P, which is 3 + 2 lanesNorman wrote:The extra space is there for wide bike lanes.
with the shared high level footpath / bike path, & 2 x 1.8 metre commuter bike paths.
Nice collection, Norman, & there are some more of beam installing on Engineering Surveys P/L site of this & other
projects ... http://www.engsurveys.com.au/gallery.php?id=17 (South Road U/P)

have traffic flow rates through the intersection returned to pre-construction levels?
Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.
[COM] Re: South Road Upgrade
I would not be surprised if the north-south corridor is 4 lanes anyway.Shuz wrote:Cheers for the pics Norm, although one must surely question time and time again - why is it not a 3x3 underpass. If we get any funding at all for a north-south corridor, we'll have to go through the whole construction process again just to expand the underpass which seems like a bloody ridiculous waste of time and inconvience for all.

[COM] Re: South Road Upgrade
I've always wondered why construction projects cost so much.
This is a broad comment, not just towards this bridge.
But lately I have been working on construction sites, and you begin to realise how little work actually gets done. There is so much fuss about union shit its ridiculous. You have to get Green Cards, J cards, White Cards. Tickets. Its balls.
Then most of the workers do fark all. They just sit about, talk (mainly about how much they are gonna get paid). Then they work, then smoko.
I know some tradies may try hard. But they get paid good wages, and they are slack. Times that good wage by the huge amount of workers the construction company employs. Its incredible. Then that construction company itself takes a slice of the pie.
I don't know how its ever going to change though. The cost of these projects, and constructions in general are ridiculous.

On construction projects, the amount the contractor earns from their role in constructing the project is determined by how quickly and how effectively they construct what is planned. The amount that the contractor gets paid from a construction job is determined from what is agreed to in the contract with the principal (the one who the work is being done for), not from the amount of time the contractor decides to spend constructing the project. If it did run into delays without agreed Extensions of Time, then the contractor would be paying financial penalties. If the client had little idea as to how much they would have to spend on construction then it would become a more financially risky process than it currently is and you'd scare off quite a few clients.JamesXander wrote:I've always wondered why construction projects cost so much.

I'm not aware of any 3x3 underpasses anywhere!Shuz wrote:Cheers for the pics Norm, although one must surely question time and time again - why is it not a 3x3 underpass. But assuming you mean a 3+3 underpass, my original answer stands: even if South Road is upgraded to 3+3, a 2+2 underpass is sufficient. There's enough Anzac Highway traffic to justify one of the lanes each way going up to join it, and traffic would probably flow more smoothly if it did.

What a load of CRAP you dont know what you are talking about do you james. Green cards are getting fazed out into white cards and is all about safety so the workers can go home alive every night and has nothing to do with the union, The union has no power anymore so you hardly ever see them on site. What are you talking about when you say that the workers are all slack , if your slack the boss will sack you because there is no job security at all the union cant do anything. The pay is also crap why do you think there is such a skill shortage because no kids want to work hard for fuckall pay do they. So i would like to know what site you think you work at.

Everyone I have talked to have said the whitecard is a load of shit. Apparently the final test they ask 'What would you wear to work, shoes, thongs or steel cap boots'.
I am allowed onto a construction site because I have a peice of paper stating I intend to get a white card. See its a load of shit.
Slack workers are everywhere, its a common consensus. I guess a streotype. Generally the workers I have seen, and I have seen a few do not put in alot of effort.
And please don't tell me kids dont want to go into the construction industry because of the pay. Its the perception of the industry that is the problem. People want to go to university becasue they think it will lead them to a better life and a better social standing.
Construction workers can earn much more then alot of University Qualified professions, which is in its own right a load of shit.
But as you said their is a skills shortage, so why would a boss fire a worker. And what incentive does a worker have to work his arse off?

You don't need a university degree to be a rigger (crane controller), but you are accepting a frigging lot of responsibility and should be (and are) paid accordingly. A university degree means jack shit unless you are willing to take responsibility for the outcomes of your work. Don't give that degree so much credence, there are a lot of people out there with degrees who just don't have a clue.JamesXander wrote: Construction workers can earn much more then alot of University Qualified professions, which is in its own right a load of shit.

Just open the immigration floodgates for construction workers/trades.. thats what they have done in IT. Will solve any "slackness" problems.
