[COM] Re: South Road Upgrade
I suppose it's a bit late now, but I wonder why they chose not to copy this design:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source= ... 2&t=k&z=18
It would have allowed for simultaneous right-turn movements. In the current design, all four right turn movements conflict with each other, so there will still need to be at least a four phase signal cycle, as opposed to a three phase cycle above. The alternate design requires a larger bridge deck but no extra land.

I think they should've built two bridge decks, and have the slip lanes meet in the middle, so to create a standard 4-way traffic intersection...

Sorry, I just realised the link doesn't work. (Google Maps "undocumented feature")
I'll try again:

[COM] Re: South Road Upgrade
I like that concept, but it doesn't allow access to properties that front on to the slip lane, (straight-through access to the slip lanes is denied by the use of traffic islands, which, in turn, facilitate a 3-phase light cycle) of which there are none in your Google photo, but there are along the South Road slip lanes. To not have properties fronting the slip lanes would have meant buying more land. I'm guessing this is the reason for the design we've ended up with.

[COM] Re: South Road Upgrade
There can still be straight-through access from one slip lane to the other (and that'd require a very short fourth phase). The important feature was that right turns do not conflict, so, for example, northbound South Rd traffic can turn right towards the City simultaneously with southbound South Road traffic turning right to Glenelg, which would be a major movement in this intersection. The built design only allows one right turn movement at any time, as all right turn movements conflict. Traffic turning right from South Road northbound towards the City would require all other traffic to stop.

[COM] Re: South Road Upgrade
IIRC it will be possible, because it will be operated as two sets of lights rather than one. Traffic turning right from South Road northbound towards the City and Southbound towards Glenelg will be possible simultaneously, but it would have to stop at the lights by the other part of South Road. In practice I expect that due to being less traffic going to Glenelg, it will have a short phase simultaneous with the first few seconds of traffic going to the City, but then the western set of lights would continue to accept traffic from South Road onto Anzac Highway (so becoming Anzac Highway traffic). The eastern set of lights would change to give a green to the Anzac Highway traffic.AtD wrote:There can still be straight-through access from one slip lane to the other (and that'd require a very short fourth phase). Anyway, plenty of simulation has been done when the intersection was designed. The chosen layout will be adequate.

Human remains at South Rd Underpass
From AdelaideNow:
From AdelaideNow:
CONSTRUCTION workers have dug up human bones - including a skull - at the South Rd underpass project this afternoon.
The gruesome discovery was made shortly before 2pm near the Mortimer St and South Rd, Kurralta Park.
A forensic pathologist and Sturt CIB detectives are on the scene and searching for more bones.
Initial reports suggest the bones have been there for many years, but further testing will be conducted.
This weekend the State Government is planning to hold a "community celebration event" on Sunday ahead of the official opening.
Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

I don't think this will be open on Monday, but it is very close to completion.deano91 wrote:So when does this actually open??
