This comment interests me... a 10 year lease!
Council has received a proposal from Cirque du Soleil to enter into a long term agreement that will see approximately 5 big top touring shows visiting Adelaide over a 10 year period. The proposed 10 year agreement will include a hard surface to remain in the Park Lands for the life of the agreement.

CIRQUE DU SOLEIL Set For A Return To Adelaide

Adelaide City Council has given the go ahead for Cirque du Soleil to present its big top production of OVO in the Park Lands later this year.

As part of a national tour, the show will be held at Tambawodli (Park 24), just off Sir Donald Bradman Drive, from 6 December 2012 through to 6 January 2013.

Based in Montreal, Cirque du Soleil is one of world’s leading and most respected entertainment companies, having performed for over 100 million spectators in more than 300 cities around the world.

Featuring an international cast of 54 performers, OVO premiered in 2009 and has since delighted audiences across North America with its colourful costumes, live music and spectacular circus acts.

“OVO will be a welcomed addition to Adelaide’s event calendar and will help enhance our reputation as a culturally vibrant city,” Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood said.

“Figures provided by Cirque du Soleil indicate that the event will bring in approximately $6.6 million in direct income through local production, food and beverage, accommodation, retail and transportation – that’s a great boost for the local economy.”

While tickets to the Adelaide season of OVO are already on sale, Cirque du Soleil has been searching over the last six months to find the best possible location for the Big Top which is both accessible to the public and environmentally suitable.

Prior to the opening of OVO on 6 December, Cirque du Soleil will spend several weeks at the site installing the signature blue-and-yellow Big Top and the surrounding Cirque du Soleil village. Under the current lease agreement, Cirque du Soleil will restore the site to its previous condition following the season of OVO.

Council is also currently planning for the development of Tambawodli (Park 24) as a major multi-purpose event space, which is supported by the Adelaide Park Lands Management Strategy.

Council is considering a 10 year lease agreement with Cirque du Soleil to develop the infrastructure and facilities in the park, including a hard surface to remain in the Park for the life of the agreement.

“Council is committed to balancing the needs of large-scale outdoor events with the protection and use of our valuable Park Lands,” said Councillor Anne Moran.

“Developing the park into a major event space will assist us in catering for a wide range of temporary outdoor events including music festivals, circuses and cultural celebrations.”

“With improved access, sewage, power supply, ground surface, shade tree plantings and public safety measures, the containment of these kinds of activities under this 10 year plan would ensure that Adelaide continues to attract major events such as Cirque du Soleil, while minimizing the impact on our parks,” said General Manager of City Culture and Community Services, Sandy Verschoor.

Consultation on the 10 year agreement begins today, 1 June until 5pm 21 June, 2012 via http://yoursay.adelaidecitycouncil.com/

Feedback will then be provided back to Council and a decision on the agreement is expected to be made in July this year.
