The article briefly outlines major transformations brought about by the widespread adoption/innovation/use of mobile phones (and increasingly, renewable energy).

They use these to illustrate the potential scale/massive change, disruption re their predictions for growth/uptake of electric vehicles and likely impacts of EVs in the global economy eg. infrastructure, cities etc.

Another relevant thread in this forum deals with autonomous vehicles and various pilot schemes, including one in SA.

This article covers wide-ranging major economic phase change predictions

(where) ... 'results rip through the whole economy and can have impacts on the societal scale.'

For all the seismic shifts electric vehicles will bring to the car industry, as with mobile phones and cheap renewable energy, as with all transformations in major economic sectors, some of the biggest impacts may be felt in other parts of the economy....

I was under the impression that our electrical infrastructure was over engineered and "gold plated". Wasn't that the reason why "we're paying too much" for electricity?

I thought we were struggling to keep the lights on especially now with Port Augusta closed, with some major industries having come close to having to close shop because of a lack of supply.
Which is why the state government is looking for another supplier and they are considering restarting the plant at outer harbour.

So if our industries came close to shut down, what effect would tens of thousands of electric cars have on the network and supply? We'd have regular scheduled rolling brown outs until more supply was found.

We are paying too much because of privatisation.
SA power networks is always wanting to increase their charges using the excuse that it's maintenance costs. I think their last bid to increase prices was rejected.
Some say our push for renewable particularly wind farms has also driven the cost to consumers up.
Now there's an American firm who want to build solar power stations across ur states outback.
Are they a charity giving out free electricity?
Why do they want to invest in SA out of all places? Because they can turn a profit here. How? Because of the high cost of electricity to consumers. Regardless of the type of power stations.

It's true, if everyone had an electric vehicle, the load on the system at night would be great. We need to get the privatised mess under control. They keep going on about the market solving problems, but set things up so the market causes problems. Socialise the costs. Privatise the profits.

News items of interest to Adelaide and SA - as ownership of EVs increases.
A recent ABCNews item highlighted additional EV charging stations being developed (by ACC) within the city (see below).

So what about longer trips eg interstate?

This item provides news supporting Tesla EV drivers making longer trips.
Sydney-Melbourne is high priority but Brisbane and Adelaide are in the mix.
Good news if you own (can afford) a Tesla.

Last week, Tesla Motors revealed it would begin charging new Tesla EV drivers a “small fee” to use its network of Superchargers, a change it said would be used to fund an expansion of that network.

This week, the Californian EV maker is already making good on that promise in Australia, with the announcement of three new Supercharging stations along Australia’s south and east coasts; two between Sydney and Brisbane and one between Melbourne and Adelaide.

Tesla said works will soon begin on a further six-bay Supercharger station at a shopping centre in Wendouree, near Ballarat – as a first stop for trips between Melbourne and Adelaide.

To recap, Tesla’s Superchargers can add up to 270km of range in just 30 minutes of charging, and while they have been used by inner-city Tesla drivers for fast, free top-ups, they are designed for city to city travel.
Tesla’s Supercharger networks are designed to allow for about three hours of driving time, in-between half-hour recharging stops.

The service, which in Australia has been limited to just a handful of locations, has also been free for all Tesla owners. But for customers whose Teslas are ordered ‪after January 1 2017‬, no such luck. These Tesla drivers will get a maximum of 400kWh Supercharging credits per annum, and will thereafter have to pay an as yet unspecified fee to use the Superchargers.

Musk said of the new Supercharger fee that it would allows Tesla “to reinvest in the network, accelerate its growth and bring all owners, current and future, the best Supercharging experience.”
