When viewing from the airport, it would be blocked out by Grote St's 100m+ development right?

Shame they aren't taking the opportunity to demolish the existing monstrosity there.

It's heritage listing, and for good reason.

Yup - great building. Would be good to see them put some money into cleaning it up a bit though, is looking a little worse for wear.

It was Adelaide's first "skyscraper" of the International style that was prevalent in the 1950s. Hence why it is heritage listed.

Another render that is not in this thread (posted by Llessur 2002 in Adelaide General Development)

They really do heritage list anything don't they. First "skyscraper" of a certain style from 70 years ago. Wow.
It's a monstrosity, one of the ugliest buildings in Adelaide.
Needs a wrecking ball.

Taste is subjective. But if something has state wide/potentially national importance, it’s perfectly reasonable to heritage list it.
[VIS] Re: 185 Victoria Square | ~112m | 31 Levels | Hotel
I agree, it's one ugly building. But i'm sure in decades to come they'll look at some of our current building and think the same.
I'm lead to believe this building had a few modern aspects for its time which make it of heritage value. One of them being the first "skyscraper" in Adelaide to have air conditioning throughout? Not sure why that's such a big deal but so be it.

I actually see great significance in the retention of Beacon House as part of this project, even if Beacon House doesn't win any beauty awards. The first post-war high-rise office building in Adelaide, which was embracing a new model of design and construction in the 1950s, surrounded by the first high-rise building to utilise CLT in Adelaide in the 2020s.
[VIS] Re: 185 Victoria Square | ~112m | 31 Levels | Hotel
It's a building of local, national and international significance. Local: first post WW2 skyscraper, first example of its architectural style (International + Functionalist elements). National: first glass curtain wall construction on a high rise in the country, first example of its modular type construction also. International: contribution to the International style and modernism.
If none of this interests you, well...
Regarding the design, it will be an interesting challenge to see how the rear extension can incorporate an extension of its functionalist elements. Certainly I'd say the state architect will be all over that (in addition to how the facade facing vic square is sympathetic to the glass curtain wall). If they can incorporate it seamlessly and in combination with CLT construction, it will be an absolutely unique building of national and international significance, adding to the building's impressive resume.

How many people actually know that? Is it going to attract tourists?AG wrote: ↑Thu Jul 28, 2022 5:00 pmI actually see great significance in the retention of Beacon House as part of this project, even if Beacon House doesn't win any beauty awards. other then a few select people, such as those of you on here who know about it or researched it, nobody knows and nobody cares.
People don't see "heritage" when they look at that building, they see an eyesore. Nothing will change in that regard even in 100 years time, it will still be an eyesore.
[VIS] Re: 185 Victoria Square | ~112m | 31 Levels | Hotel
Agreed. We have demolished far better looking buildings than this eyesore in the past. Being granted heritage status for being the 'first international standard' skyline in Adelaide is nothing more than a token gesture. The building is hideous for such a prominent location in our city.rev wrote: ↑Thu Jul 28, 2022 7:37 pmHow many people actually know that? Again, these things are all subjective. Many people absolutely do see "heritage" when they look at modernist buildings - it has quite a large and ever increasing global following, in fact.A-Town wrote: ↑Thu Jul 28, 2022 11:07 pmAgreed. Also, which bit of recognizing a groundbreaking building part of an important 20th century architectural movement is a "token gesture"?
