Railway museum to shunt trains for Port rail line revival

The National Railway Museum says it may have to lose some rolling stock exhibits as it downsizes after losing land and tracks to a $51 million plan to return a passenger rail line to the heart of Port Adelaide.

Labor pledged before the state election to bring passenger trains back into the Port Adelaide city centre by rebuilding the mothballed Port Dock Railway, which runs off the existing Outer Harbor line and into the eastern side of the National Railway Museum.

The line has been closed since 1981. The Department says early works to revitalise the 1km railway will start later this year ahead of completion in 2024.

Designs have been unveiled for a $24m public transportation overhaul to connect passengers with the “heart of Port Adelaide”.

New artist impressions have been released for the proposed Port Dock Railway Line Project, which is set to become an offshoot of the Outer Harbor line.

The 7ha site will include a new Port Dock Railway Station, a pedestrian plaza and bus interchange at Grand Junction Rd and Baker St, according to the development application currently out for public consultation.

“(The project will) provide improved public transport and passenger access to the heart of Port Adelaide, encouraging rejuvenation of the suburb and visits to the Port area and its attractions,” it reads.



It also proposes to assist “in the activation of the Port Adelaide precincts including McLaren’s Wharf precinct, Dock One precinct, Woolsheds & Port Approach and the commercial retail areas”.

The project, headed by the Department for Transport and Infrastructure, was initially proposed in 2018 by the Public Transport Project Alliance (PTPA) but withdrawn in June 2019 after reconsideration.

Plans for the Port Dock Railway Station were relaunched in 2022 including access changes for the South Australian Aviation Museum and the Outer Harbor Greenway.
Under the new proposal the current National Railway Museum track will be replaced, as well as modifications to the signalling, to ensure train services can run from the Outer Harbor line to the new station.

The station design is set to “create a platform and canopy that integrates with the access stairs and ramps seamlessly as a single cohesive architectural piece”.

The plaza will be complete with seating and shelter as well as greenery, LED lighting and bicycle loops, according to the application.

“The project represents a significant opportunity to provide an enhanced station precinct with greatly improved connectivity and safety along with high quality amenities,” it says.

“The project seeks to achieve a high performing piece of public infrastructure whilst maintaining a respectful relationship to the heritage context.”

Public consultation is currently open and closes on July 13.

For it's mainly Pirate Life, and perhaps rail fans headed to the National Railway Museum that will use this station. Based on where it's positioned its hardly taking passengers into the "heart of Port Adelaide" and is a lot of money to rebuild a fairly insignificant spur line, considering there's an existing Port Adelaide station so close by. But then that's the cost of keeping an election promise.

Loathed to re-ignite the old chestnut here, but this is a prime example of why light rail is a far better option for the OH corridor- if only because it allows for rail to penetrate beyond the corridor itself. Light rail could continue with street running along St Vincent- and link Pt Adelaide with Semaphore...allowing all those new Pot Adelaide residents better PT access to semaphore beach. Linking the two would prove very popular in summer. This is but one example.

A tram down Semaphore Road connecting it through to Port Adelaide and the Dock One development (and even a branch down Commercial Rd) would be far more useful than putting full-size, infrequent trains along Semaphore Rd again. Would connect the Port area to the beach and v.v. with up to 3 convenient tram-train interchanges, and make the area far more walkable.

There is no regular bus route that links Semaphore and the Port area, the only way is by car.
