Yesterday the State Premier and Infrastructure Minister turned the first sod to mark the beginning of major construction on this project. Completion date to be in early 2022

Here's a video I recorded back in December, showing the progress of the project.

Most of the work is now completed, just resurfacing and landscaping to go.

And there is a lot of space for landscaping.

Don't get me wrong, using the intersection is great but there is a lot of space left over.

I do wonder if there is any future need for it or we are just going to have a lot of green space

What makes this project even more ridiculous, is that there's a fair bit of a slope down to Magill Road im both directions, Northbound and Southbound on Portrush Road. I'm surprised why an overpass wasn't considered to take advantage of the natural gradient of the land.

I believe it will be sold off, the map indicates the vacant areas as "future land use to be determined".

Would be an interesting couple of sites to buy.

I wonder what it would get them in sales, mind end up making the cost of the project a bit more reasonable

Exactly. We can only hope in future this will happen as this intersection as it is will not solve much on the north-south axis but frustration when traffic funnels again into two lanes after the lights in both directions. The only winners are those on the turning lanes.

Cheers

I think we will see plans to reduce Traffic on the road before we ever see an overpass.

If you got rid of all the heavy traffic you wouldn't even need the current upgrade. Another issue with the overpass is the substation. They would need to underground those overhead high tension wires.

Cheers

Maybe, but the fact you would have to enter/exit the sites from turning lanes would seem to make them very unsuitable for development.

Anyone know what all the shipping containers in the vacant sites are for? Are they a temporary noise reduction wall or something else?
