The Advertiser wrote:Glenelg’s foreshore is set for another high-rise development, with plans for a $165m luxury apartment tower on the South Esplanade.

Developer Chasecrown has lodged plans to transform the Seawall Apartments site, around 500 metres south of Moseley Square, into a luxury tower comprising 93 apartments.

The building has been designed to scale in height from five storeys at the southern boundary to 13 stories at the northern end where a laneway links the esplanade with Oldham Street.

The project would bookend a strip of high-density development between the Stamford Grand and Pier Street.

Details of the project will soon be released by the State Commission Assessment Panel (SCAP) for public consultation.

All seven existing buildings on the site will need to be demolished to make way for the development, including a two-storey Victorian mansion at 22-23 South Esplanade which is local heritage listed.

Chasecrown argues a heritage review of the property found the building had “low historical authenticity in its built form and fabric”.

“In addition, the building has undergone significant alteration, with any attempt to recover its original historic form requiring approximate reproduction which would add no heritage value,” the company says in its submission.

My first thought on that picture is that someone salvaged the back end of a cruise ship and parked it onshore. I don't know the area well enough to know if that is appropriate.

I think that the zoning goes down from 13 storeys to 5 storeys here... so they maybe were forced to do this to try to appease/get approval. I guess the worse alternative may have been just a 5 storey rectangular building.

I thought this would be a bit closer to the other new development along the Esplanade, but it is quite a bit further down. It looks chunky, not sure if I like it, it would be nice to see how it compares to the height of surrounding buildings.

Love it. Want more like it both here and in the CBD. Adelaide needs more curves.

It's like 300m away.

Seems the nimbys have been broken in the area, not much of a whimper out of them with recent developments completed or proposed.

That's 14 to 17 pictured in your screenshot. 21 to 25 are known as the Seawall Apartments, and are located between Pier Street and Saltram Street.

The description is in the article.
Pier street to the laneway that links the esplanade to Oldham street. The whole block is going to be cleared to make way for this development. Five levels at Pier Street climbing to 13 levels at the laneway.

I was asked to sign a paper petition against this development last night while in Glenelg. Apparently people living locally are concerned about the loss of heritage buildings, with fears even the Stormont building could eventually be at risk. I politely declined, although a couple of my friends did.

I guess they count sheds as buildings now at the advertiser.

Why wouldn't they just take the whole block though.
