The Advertiser wrote:Nextdc will build a $100m data centre on the former City Beach site on Pirie St after it was sold by the City of Adelaide for an undisclosed sum.

The $4.6bn sharemarket-listed company has committed to build a data centre including an “Entrepreneur and Innovation Centre and a “Mission Critical Operational Space”, the State Government said, with construction expected to start in the second half of this year.

The former volleyball site at 211 Pirie St was earmarked for sale in the council’s 2021-22 budget, as it sought to find new sources of revenue to soften the impact of pandemic-related drops in income and the cost of support packages.

The site includes the former volleyball courts, as well as the adjoining Pirie Flinders UPark car park.

A new location for volleyball has been identified at Bonython Park, with Lord Mayor Sandy Verschoor saying the council was working with Volleyball SA with regard to their transition to that site.

Ms Verschoor said the plans for the new building, which will be called “A1”, were “truly impressive’’.

“Beyond the data centre capabilities, we will see a facility which includes an Entrepreneur and Innovation Centre where universities and businesses can collaborate,’’ she said.

Great to see that NextDC is investing in setting up a data centre here, which will also support what is happening down the road at Lot 14.

The quality of the renders looks horrible - hopefully this is an internal job done within NextDC and not by a professional architectural firm.

Disappointing. I would rather the city beach volleyball.

Wow seems like Adelaide is the place to build at the moment. Developments popping up everywhere.

I would say there’s been a fairly steady stream of proposals for a number of years now. It’s more about how many actually get up or not.

This one kind of reminds me of a computer?

I particularly like the the sign on the corner that completely blocks the footpath.

Or the first render that includes the beach volleyball court at the rear..

That last image looks like it was put together in MSPaint with that crazy scale. Amazing.

A data server is sort of the modern day equivalent of the Telstra exchanges on Waymouth/Flinders st isn’t it?

Thank god the council were kicked out of the planning sector, nothing would have gone up with them in charge.

It looks like someone took a copy of NextDC's Perth P2 data centre and overlaid it on the site... pretty sure this is not what the building will look like.

There have been no higher quantities of development now than say five years ago? Popping up everywhere? I’ve I missed something? Have I walked into this forum in 2010?

The shape of the block and the shape of the building, as presented in the renders, do not marry up in the slightest.

I hope this goes ahead - nice height and a bit of diversity in building use.

When people they save to the "cloud" that just means saving to someone else's server.

It will be good to get some sovereignty in important data storage, rather than using servers in the US or interstate or wherever.

Quite a few hi-tech jobs emerging in Adelaide, which is good for the future.

Pretty sure I don't need an ACC councilor explaining the positive attributes of a data centre
