I once read speculation of Ryan Air coming here... but not sure how they are travelling. Is there any other airline/s that are strong enough/not as affected that could look at coming to Australia?
Btw, do you think that Virgin refunds, pre-paid tickets & velocity/frequent flyer points will all be lost ie basically just unsecured creditors and part of their $5 billion debt?

Any talk of Branson putting up Necker island as collateral is primarily (or only) for Virgin Atlantic, a completely seperate airline and debt issue.

Emirates has suspended reservation for all flights between 15 May and 30 June. As of today the first flight available for reservation is scheduled on 1 July.
Here's the Australian schedule:
Dubai – Adelaide eff 01SEP20 1 daily 777-200LR
Dubai – Brisbane eff 01JUL20 1 daily 777-300ER (2nd daily with A380 to resume on 25OCT20)

Labors Albanese was in front of the cameras the other day talking about how "they"(gov) got it right" in terms of two majors with two low cost attached to them. Well clearly Mr Albanese its not working if one of the majors has gone into administration with billionw in debt.
Perhaps the answer is government takes a stake?
Singapore Airlines is 56% owned by a government company, Temasek Holdings. SIA is routinely rated as one of the top airlines in the world.
Qatar Airlines & Emirates also owned by their respective governments and also top rated airlines.
The gov is copying Singapore's model for a covid tracking app, why not copy their model for airline ownership and apply it?
Hell le Virgin return to being a budget service and bring back the Ansett brand. Wrap them up under a government owned company like Temasek Holdings.

Because the federal government made the conscious decision decades ago not to be in the business of aviation. This failure has nothing to do with whether or not Australia can sustain a second major airline, but rather how those who own and operate the second airline are running their business; the Australian market has demonstrated that there is plenty of room for two or more carriers. There are so many factors in this, and the simple answer was never going to be for a government bailout or for the government to buy the airline, as it is, there is already plenty of interest in the airline since it went into administration (some of those interested parties are major Australian companies). Two fairly obvious problems with the business were: one, they didn't own much outright, they were leasing a heap of their rolling stock. Absolutely we have room for 2 or more major airlines. The second busiest domestic route in the world is Melbourne-Sydney. That's 2019 stats, in 2018 Melbourne-Sydney was third. In 2015 we had 69.2 million domestic passengers in Australia, obviously that's grown.
Obviously governments have backed out of involvement in airlines, but if it means we maintain competition in the market, then the government should get involved again. It works for some of the worlds major most highly rated airlines, why can't it work in Australia.
Create some holding companies like Temasek to take majority stakes in Qantas and Virgin. Hell like I said bring back Ansett and have three major airlines serving Australia, New Zealand and Oceania/Pacific/Indian Oceans.
Tell me that people wouldn't love to see the Ansett logo in the skies again.

Virgin needs to become a JetBlue like LCC and be re-named.
You do not need to be a full service airline for East Coast hops. Only cross country or New Zealand.
The "new" Virgin will only be an Australia domestic/New Zealand and Bali airline, with a slight chance of Singapore.
They will reduce their fleet to turboprops, 737's and a few A330's. The 777's will be sold.
Tiger is done.

Why do you assume that flights to Adelaide and Perth are unprofitable? They are very well patronised and have very good loadings. Adelaide to Melbourne and Adelaide to Sydney are in the top 10 routes in Australia. If any flights will be cut it will be regional towns like Bundaberg, Albury and Alice Springs.

The best solution is a consumer cooperative takes over Virgin and then dominates the market. That way we don't need to have multiple airlines for the sake of competition to lower prices, the cooperative just runs the airline with no intention of making a profit.

Perth airport has moved heavy equipment in front of Virgins aircraft to stop them leaving as Virgin owes them something like $16 million and apparently have said they wont pay.
