How are tram operations managed around the end of service when the last trams are still running up and down the main line? To put it another way, where are the trams stored prior to the end of service so that they don't block services coming up and down the line?

The south yard at Glengowrie will be expanded to have 6 tracks (including cross-overs) to allow for storage and shunting. There will also be an extra track on the east side(where the current car park is).

Can anyone access a yard plan of the new improved Glengowrie Dept. Would love to see this and any catering for more expansion when the tramlines extend again.

There is a fairly lengthy Government document(56 pages) about the upgrade/new trams/future and current Public Transport network/infrastructure-- up to 2017/2018.If you do a Google search "Glengowrie Tram Depot upgrade" there is a document at the top "Report 370 -Glengowrie Tram Depot upgrade"-it has 3 parts that you can download-the last one which is the one referred to above takes about 8-9 mins to download depending on your speed-it is very interesting and has lots of coloured diagrams of different aspects of the upgrade, including tram barn, new Operations building and new North and Southyard layouts including new tracks, new paint workshops and new tram wash.
The new Southyard track layout(in colour) is on Page 26--Enjoy reading.(you can save it as a PDF file).

Most appreciated guys - the exact thing I needed to see. Concerning the SAJC land along Morphett RD - seems a good idea to buy that for the future beyond 2018 as it looks like the tram facilities will run out of land with the tram network expansion to Semaphore and Pt Adelaide as well as any other proposals.

I noticed that in the Southyard that some track laying/crossovers have occured. In the constructors area further assembling of track is taking place.Work is still continuing in the Southyard on digging, excavating, drainage works.New overhead support poles have now been erected in the Southyard.Work is progressing fairly quickly.

In this shot, barricades are in place to protect contractors who will be working on the depot expansion.

Hi Michael, The shots are taken on the eastern fence line.

Tonight (Sun 9th of May) as I was driving along Morphett Rd, I noticed that there were no trams in the depot's northern yard.
The barn's southern doors were open and there were at least a couple of trams on the newly laid tracks but it was too dark for photos.
I'd imagine that this is the end of all-night stabling at stop 12.

Bill.

Work has commenced on the Northern Yard tracks. The 2 eastern tracks have been dug up,whilst barricades are in place between them and the 2 useable western tracks.Work onthe Southern Yard seems to have almost stopped even though there are still jobs to complete. The original damaged body of Flexity 103 was being lifted by 2 crane trucks this morning.Didn't have time to stay around to see where they were taking it
