[COM] Re: SWP Rundle Pl:Bendigo-Adel Bank, Harris Scarfe, Coles 72
Went into the city after work yesterday and by the looks nothing has really changed since the last few posts here. The Rundle Mall side looks as it always has but as mentioned above, the Grenfell Street frontage is well into being removed. The roof has all been lifted exposing the beams.
Will be posting some more photos to my Flickr tonight if anyone is interested.
Just thinking though, while looking at the Rundle Mall side, it is going to be a great shame to loose these buildings to another boring glass box with no style or class. Everyone should pick up a copy of the book "Lost Adelaide" to see how much we have already had taken away (its at the state library if anyone wants to see it).

I respect what your saying bay
but isn;t life about improving and renewing? whe would we want a city full of 100 year old buildings?

I agree baytram. I'm worried that the stretch of mall where this is going up will become characterless and boring, given it also includes the not very inspiring Woolworths and David Jones buildings. Part of the charm of Rundle Mall/Street for me is the character streetscape; I enjoy admiring the older buildings as I walk its length. Which I guess is another point, Waewick: it wouldn't matter so much that we were losing these buildings if what was replacing it didn't promise to be so uninteresting.
Keep Adelaide Weird
[COM] Re: SWP Rundle Pl:Bendigo-Adel Bank, Harris Scarfe, Coles 72
It would of been nice if they could of incorporated the facade into the building design. There are many buildings around Adelaide that have done this, ie. Westpac House or I think Chesser House also (not too sure on that one). I would of kept character and a bit of heritage whilst allowing for the skyline to grow.

^ and then there is the Myer Centre, where it has been done terribly, like heritage facade window and then solid wall behind it, it looks so bad

The gantry in the laneway is now complete all the way from Da Costa arcade into Rundle Mall. I say complete although the sides are not enclosed and I imagine they probably will have to be at some point, but the main structure is complete.
I wonder if they'll be doing the same thing in the opposite laneway (Lindes place I think it's called)? Is so I'm surprised they haven't started yet and I would have thought they'll have to because demolition will be happening there and people will still be using it presumably to access the carpark so they'll need to have a safe access route.

um Id rather the heritage facade anyday over that green n gold shite that faces Rundle Mall. The original Myer building on the mall was so beautifully grand, wished theyd kept that facade toometro wrote:^ and then there is the Myer Centre, where it has been done terribly, like heritage facade window and then solid wall behind it, it looks so bad

In answer to the bold - would have been good if they retained Jun Martin's facade too - same reasons.jk1237 wrote:um Id rather the heritage facade anyday over that green n gold shite that faces Rundle Mall. Check HSs history and their interstate retail business purchases. Plus of interest, many of HSs store managers are recruited from Cheap'as'Chips stores. I'm not kidding.dsriggs wrote:The City Store's been sub-Target/Big W for a while now.NoobyMcNooberton wrote:Heritage is heritage, Harris Scarfes will just be another Target/Big W now....

Quick update. Once again sorry no camera with me.
Brick Apex of the roof on the Grenfell St end of the building (side furthest from carpark) has been removed. A gantry has started to be erected in Lindes Lane but is built of scaffolding so nowhere near as heavy duty as the one at the other side of the building.
Site offices now have some internal walls cladded.
Lots of internal noise can be heard, sounds like sawing / drilling.
A pedestrian walkway has been created between the temporary fencing and the road barriers on Grenfell Street allowing people to walk past the facade where it was previously totally closed off.
That's about all that's visibly changed for now.
