Not even remotely true. Even the better heeled suburbs of Adelaide are badly let down by local councils maintenance of local parks/gardens and verges. Dead/long grass, street trees planted and then left to die, mature trees butchered and then not replaced, parks not irrigated (supposedly due to the drought that ended three years ago) and even local residets seem to have been made feel guilty for watering. What once was a green and inviting summer haven has now become a dry barren unkempt mess, regardless of your postcode.crawf wrote:Really?. I think you've been going to the wrong suburbs then.
I can't comment on the USA or any other country, though Adelaide is just about on par with other Australian cities. You've got your good areas aswell as the bad areas

Exactly. I'm glad somebody else has noticed this. The suburbs really need some maintenance and TLC, I've drove around perfectly middle class and even upper class areas and said to myself "what a mess!" It really is that bad, and you're right about the butchering of the trees - something Adelaide's council can never get right is trees. Either they plant mis-matched species right next to one another, they cut down perfectly grown and healthy trees and replace them with literally sticks. The sidewalks are usually lined with gravel (yes gravel and not grass!) or nothing at all. There is no care that goes into keeping suburbia neat and trim and it's quite disappointing, since suburbia is supposed to be a safe haven meanwhile I feel like I've drove into a ghetto.claybro wrote:Even the better heeled suburbs of Adelaide are badly let down by local councils maintenance of local parks/gardens and verges. The only Australian cities that I've visited that had a nice, presentable suburban area were Canberra (probably because it's a planned city) and the south eastern parts of Melbourne. New Zealand does suburbia a lot better, and everyone does their little bit to take care of their garden, thus giving the whole street and ultimately the whole suburb an attractive presentation. The same just cannot be said for Adelaide. Who is to blame? Lazy, tasteless home owners or the council or both?
P.S. Sorry for derailing the thread but I thought it was worth mentioning.

Wow. I didn't want to continue with the thread diversion, but I couldn't let this go without saying something. I have lived here for five years now, and one thing that always strikes me is that the verges and front gardens in Canberra are generally terrible! Far worse than Adelaide.stronic wrote:The only Australian cities that I've visited that had a nice, presentable suburban area were Canberra...
I think you might have just been driving around the embassy enclaves, Stronic.

EDIT -- PS: Vic Square is shaping up very nicely and showing lots of potential!

Last night the lights on under the Arbour on the western side were lit up. Going to look amazing at night when it's all complete.

That last pic starts to give a better impression of what will be like. I have to admit I thought this effort was not going to work at all but the pic in addition to several of the later comments greatly encourage me about the final result.
PS.It would be good to have somthing as a taller eye catcher in the centre all the time - lighting would make a big difference.

From the recent pic (above) it looks there is is going to be three roadways thorough the middle of the square. Is the middle (original roadway) area going to be a road or not - or just have a mirror image of the one in the pic (roughly where queen Victoria is)....?

As I understand it from the plans, the current west bound lanes that curve around will become bus lanes (west bound), the lanes currently carrying east bound traffic will become the west bound lanes on completion, the unfinished lanes will become the east bound lanes and there will be a bike lane curving around for east bound traffic as well.Torrens_5022 wrote:From the recent pic (above) it looks there is is going to be three roadways thorough the middle of the square.
