Re: Fourth hottest day on record - 45.1 degrees!
Don't know if you guys are aware but last night fire at One Tree Hill almost took out the main power sub-statiom which interconnects SA with other states(or something to that effect). If it had gone up in flames most of SA would be without power.
Perhaps this will serve as incentive to diversify our power connections so we aren't so vulnerable.

If it was to strike the polar ice caps, every continent will shrink because of coastal flooding!

Perhaps this will serve as an incentive for people in this country to wake the f*ck up about global warming and the very evident threats it is posing to our country and our economy. Bushfires here, heat waves there. It's ridiculous. The last 10 years have been the hottest ever. We had record breaking heat waves in 2008, again in early 2009, again in late 2009, and again in 2013-14. Yet people still manage to bury their heads.rev wrote: Perhaps this will serve as incentive to diversify our power connections so we aren't so vulnerable.

It's not called global warming anymore, the new thing to call it is climate change.stronic wrote:Perhaps this will serve as an incentive for people in this country to wake the f*ck up about global warming and the very evident threats it is posing to our country and our economy. We've always had bushfires and heatwaves..don't know where you've been living or where you grew up, but they are a normal part of an Australian summer.
Here comes another heatwave. Enjoy, I know I will.

Guys don't do this. Seriously. I think more of you.
Weather is not climate.
Climate change is happening. Look at the records.

The sad reality is that we live in a society where experts are no longer respected to the same degree as yesteryear. Today, there is a significant proportion of the population who believes that a few minutes of 'research' on google entitles them to have an opinion just as valid as a university professor.monotonehell wrote:Guys don't do this. Climate change is only part of the problem; just look at the anti-vaccine lobby.....

Thought I would highlight this to demonstrate how "global warming" is enhanced by relentless media beat up. Well before an approaching "heatwave", the media get themselves into a lather, with offical information provided from the BOM regarding a heatwave the following week. PLEASE NOTE, the last 2 days heat ,while extreme, did not even make to official defintion of a heatwave. Yet the media continue to call it thus. Also, the heat we are experiencing has occured several times in even our short recorded history. ie late 1800's, early 1900's, 1930's and so on. And then we get reality... temps next week in the low to mid 30's, but all we will remember in 10 years is the summer from hell, brought to us by the hysterical media. Not to say the climate is not changing....it always does, but so far, it all seems it has happened before, except in those days, before airconditioning and refridgeration, we were made of tougher stuff, and just got on with it.rev wrote:It's not called global warming anymore, the new thing to call it is climate change.stronic wrote:Perhaps this will serve as an incentive for people in this country to wake the f*ck up about global warming and the very evident threats it is posing to our country and our economy. Re: Fourth hottest day on record - 45.1 degrees!
Isn't a heatwave when temperatures for X amount of days is above 35 Celsius?
And I agree about the media hype.
We have seen a number of times, including today, during fires this summer were authorities tell people to leave their homes immediately.
I'm not sure, but someone could correct me if I am wrong on this, but I think the way they handle these situations now has changed, and they are being more cautious and taking more precautions in advance of a situation escalating to the point where homes are being lost and they can't bring the fire under control, to avoid a major catastrophe where lives are lost.
The current fires in the hills are out of control, but they haven't said there is a threat to property yet. They have said that people should activate their bushfire emergency plans, and if their plan says to leave, then leave now.
But the media is taking that and running with it as if those people are in a situation where they are in immediate danger.
While yes they are in danger if they stay and the fire remains out of control, the danger is no immediate. They don't have to run to their cars and flat foot it out of their.
Anyhow, more hot weather this week.
Here's a site that I don't think I've seen posted here, or advertised by the government or relevant agencies, which I think it should be considering how many fires we have had, and especially in the Hills. There's two fires burning now in the Belair National Park with emergency warnings.
