The SA Politics Thread
Re: The SA Politics Thread
Apparently losing the car industry could cost 90,000 jobs and 8 billion annually.
If as they say it's only going to cost 150 million a year to keep Holden producing here, then why aren't they doing it?
The whole thing's a fucking joke anyway. Excuse my language.
But it doesn't seem like any of our governments in recent times, Labor or Liberal, seem to give two shits about protecting Australian jobs and industries.

Closure of the Oz car industry - hard times ahead. (SMH)
This piece in the SMH adds a perspective on industry support, the impact of the high Aussie dollar, the impact and fallout for the states and Australia as a whole. Support/subsidies for the car industry pale into significance when looking at government subsidies for diesel in the mining industry at $3billion per year and for negative gearing at $5billion per year.
It's not just the big car makers but the myriad of component suppliers and the whole support system, loss of high technical skills and adaptability in the future as industries transform in a smart, clean, green era. I feel for the workers and their families and the knock on effect in areas such as Elizabeth and surrounds. Welfare dollars and misery (personal, family, mortgage stress etc) substitute for loss of income tax payments and wellbeing.
SA will take a huge hit in unemployment, confidence, consumer spending and redirection of state govt. funds. Charities will be over stretched. Our share of GST, already under threat, could take a bigger whack. Bi-partisan support, federal and state, and vision and planning beyond short electoral cycles is sorely needed.

The Guardian reports that Labor left contingency money in the federal budget - until 2017.

From today's In-Daly
Re Holden's
"The Liberals, for so long demanding a “seat at the table” with the State Government, didn’t even bother addressing the Productivity Commission when it visited Adelaide for public hearings, largely because “there’s nothing we can do about it”. Finally, after the stable door had been kicked down, Marshall leapt into action, jumping on a plane (the same one, incidentally, upon which Weatherill had been booked for some days) to talk to Tony Abbott (much like Weatherill) in a bid to convince him to come to the party on a transition arrangement (the substance of which Weatherill had already outlined). It was, one presumes, his way of saying: “Look at me, I’m here too, being Premier-like.”
The State Liberals have been so afraid of picking sides on Holden that they simply sat on the steps of parliament with their thumbs in their mouths, occasionally throwing their dummy at passers-by. By accident or by design, Weatherill has redrawn the political enemy at the forthcoming state election, not as Steven Marshall but as Tony Abbott."

Re: The SA Politics Thread
Indaily have had an issue with the State Liberals for a while. especially the leader.
I'm really not sure what SA can do about Holden, however as a state we do have a real liking for leaders who say lots and do nothing.

The SA Politics Thread
I have said it before, it's poor that GM don't appear to be willing to sell Holden as a going concern as they did with some of their European operations and as Ford did with Volvo.
I have read that industry insiders believe that a sale of Holden's as a going concern to a Chinese or Indian manufacturer would be the best option.
With the commodore It would give an Indian/Chinese company a world class reliable product to sell and break into new markets and the Holden design team could revamp a range of cars
Some arm twisting should be happening behind the scenes to make this happen. Obviously if GM aren't prepared to sell Holden as a going concern, they realise its value in competitors hands.
If I was the premier I would be on a plane talking to Great Wall, BYD, Cherry, Tata, to drum up a buyer and demand or shame GM into selling it!

that is a low act on GMH part if true, I mean if they are shutting it down, what is their problem.
Re: The SA Politics Thread
Hey dog are you involved in politics?
Are you more interested in state or federal politics?
Are you more interested in state or federal politics?
Re: The SA Politics Thread
Hi Waewick, no, not involved in politics! Went to some meetings once or twice, but who really wants to sit around all night and talk conspiracy theories, plan fund raisers like chook raffles and wine sales when you just want to get on and make things happen!Waewick wrote:Hey dog are you involved in politics?

I suspect the other side aren't much better!

I really don't identify with either party but would just love to get involved in moving this state forward. Irritating.
Re: The SA Politics Thread
Would be better to get German investors.
If productivity is so low, as some claim, the Germans will have the place pumping out cars more efficiently then anyone. That, or they'll be involved in some sort of corruption scandal and then flee back to Germany where the German government will refuse to send them back to face court. Who knows, it could work out pretty good in such an event, some politicians could take off as well and never come back. Would be a win-win almost.

Re: Beer Garden
Can't understand why the States opposition leaders sisters battle with cancer(diagnosed in September) is front page worthy in the middle of an election campaign, which continues for a third of a page on page 4.
Will News Ltd give any of the Premiers sick relatives the same coverage during this election campaign?
I'm sure it will all add greatly to helping people decide who to vote for next month.

Re: Beer Garden
We all know that the Advertiser / News Ltd is fervently pro-Liberal. Rupert Murdoch probably had a hand in it and called up the editor personally overnight to double check the front page headlines - he did this quite often during the Federal campaign apparently - remember the Sydney Telegraph's "Now's the time to kick this mob out" cover? That was Murdochs' doing. They're just trying to shore up the sympathy vote and will do whatever they can to influence the swinging voters into the Liberal's direction.rev wrote:Can't understand why the States opposition leaders sisters battle with cancer(diagnosed in September) is front page worthy in the middle of an election campaign, which continues for a third of a page on page 4.

Why bother anymore, really? We might as well forget even having the election, save some money in the time and process and just hand the reigns over to Marshall & the Liberals.

This is why we should all fight Tony Abbott's attempts at silencing the ABC and SBS.
We need an alternative opinion in this country, not just our own version of FOX.
