Anyone know the latest on the restoration of the Pennington Gardens at the front of the Oval? It's currently a fenced off overgrown bog, and an embarrassing forefront to the magnificent and highly praised Oval complex. To get so far and then lose interest at the last hurdle is very disappointing, as noted by some recent intestate visitors.

You realise that although we here at Sensational Adelaide have labelled this "Complete" the finishing touches to a lot of the surrounds including the Footbridge, landscaping etc are yet to be complete.

"Adelaide Oval" and "embarrassing" are two things that I have never heard together since the redevelopment and I await the 100% completion of the development before passing judgement (with that being said, it gets a resounding thumbs up from me regardless. It is fantastic.)

If Pennington Gardens still looked unfinished in 6 or 12 month you may have a valid point but really and where do these critical interstate visitors come from? The fact that there's a fence around it would suggest there's still work to do and no one has lost interest.

nope, I agree, its been almost three months since the oval opened. the landscaping should have been done now, assuming that's all it is. it could be more involved than that.

The Minister responsible explained back in March that the gardens could not be worked on because the area was still a "building site". It's now June and close to a half a million people have attended games at the oval, with thousands more attending functions there. The Oval is indeed magnificent, but the long delay in completion of the garden setting is puzzling in terms of attention to detail for such a major project.

The Melbourne Herald Sun reported in March that the Pennington gardens would not be be completed till after the footy season in September. (It must have been a very slow news day in Melbourne) Image

Nothing like a bit of friendly Adelaide bashing on a quiet news day by our Melbourne friends, perhaps "Honey of a City" your interstate visitors came pre armed with their disappointment? Did you take the opportunity to show them the old Le Cornu site as well?

Lol. No the Le Cornu site wasn't on their itinerary,(or mine). They actually came over for the footy(not from Melbourne), and were pretty hyped about going to the Oval, which they'd heard so much about. They loved the experience and the whole project, but hadn't expected it to still be a work in progress. Thanks for the newspaper article. That explains it. Bit of a shame though.

Cheers, Honey of the city, it's drawing some interstate friends, sure we saw Daryl Braithwaite ( for those old enough to remember the rock legend) on he's way to the crows/gold coast game on the weekend.

Um, you realise Tim Williams is New Limited's South Australian journalist for The City/Advertiser/AdelaideNow? That's just the Herald Sun re-publishing an Adelaide written piece about a venue that has drawn national attention. There's no Melbourne bashing going on here.

That's right it's not "Melbourne Bashing" it's "Adelaide Bashing" and wouldn't you know it sourced from our local Advertiser/Adelaide now team. Bad enough running the state down to South Australians with out syndicating it to Melbourne papers!

It has nothing to do with Melbourne. All of Murdoch's News Corp-owned online articles are on the www.news.com.au database. You can make an AdelaideNow article look like it's also in the Herald Sun simply by modifying the URL.

This morning I heard on the radio Mark Ricciuto commenting on the revenue generated by the Power and Crows playing at Adelaide Oval .

As an example after the record crowd Port vs Hawthorne 52,000+ Port Adelaide as a club only made a profit of 70cents per person . That's horse shit !!!

The SMA draw all profits from food and beverage on top of there management fee's and the SANFL still have a finger or five in the pie ! Crazy stuff

If that 70c figure is accurate, then it is woeful. Time for an audit and cleansing of the SMA.

Are you not understanding what we're saying? News Limited re-use stories from a variety of sources across their verticals. Tim Williams is an SA journo who writes for the SA arms of News Limited. It wasn't written by a Victorian for a Victorian audience. It was written by someone in Adelaide and then re-used by the interstate onlines.
