ASIMO robot visits Adelaide - but comes in peace

ONE of the world's most advanced humanoid robots has arrived in Adelaide - and hopefully isn't merely scoping the city out for a Terminator-style uprising.

ASIMO seems like a much friendlier type of robot - despite a slightly sinister black mask he is content to perform genteel tasks like serving tea and kicking a soccer ball.

He can also shake hands, as Adelaide Lord Mayor Michael Harbison discovered today.

The recently re-installed Lord Mayor had better hope ASIMO isn't interested in running for local government, as the 130cm-tall Honda-built humanoid has proved remarkably popular during his Australian tour.

ASIMO is the 11th generation of Honda robots, which started in 1986. He can walk up stairs - which means he's already more advanced than Dr Who's malevolent Daleks - serve food and drink, push carts and even jog at 6km/h.

ASIMO will perform for 25 minutes, five times a day, in Rymill Park (cnr of East Tce and Rundle Rd) today, tomorrow and Sunday.

The asimo website ( http://www.asimo.com.au/ ) states that you need to get tickets (for free) from the merchandise truck.

First shows tickets available 1 hour before the show, all others available two hours out. I'm going to try myself, but their ticket policy makes it hard...

Shows at 1030, 1230, 1430, 1630 & 1830 on Saturday
And 0900, 1100, 1300, 1500 & 1700 on Sunday.

(seating capacity is 350 pax)

Meh not phased by Asimo.

However I do like the footage of him falling down the stairs on youtube. It is crazy how fast they cover him up!
