To combat that, they should have really good lighting, make it as bright as possible, and install lots of security cameras, and advertise that fact.

Considering that the design borrows heavily from a combination of Mawson Lakes interchange and the tramstops on the extension, I don't think lighting is really going to be an issue. I do really like the look of it. There is one thing I wish it could have and that is a bus interchange for South Road bus services. My mind is now ticking over if such a thing is possible at the current Goodwood Flyover.

EDIT: Just read the article properly, discard my statement about the bus interchange, looks like there will be one.

First look at $28m tram overpass

THE first images of the planned $28 million South Rd tram overpass have been released by the State Government.

Four colour artist's impressions - distributed to nearby properties late yesterday - show how the new bridge will change the streetscape of the main thoroughfare.

Trams will run in both directions over the 7m wide, 40m long platform, to be built 7.5m above ground level.

Passengers will use lifts and stairs to reach the sheltered platform, with car parks, indented bus bays and ``people-friendly'' spaces underneath.

Screens and safety barriers will ``prevent objects being thrown from the overpass and overlooking into private property backyards''.

The overpass is expected to be completed by the end of next year. Documents about the images warn the end result ``may well look different from this preliminary concept''.

Transport Minister Patrick Conlon said these concept plans were the result of ``a great deal of consultation''. ``We look forward to working with the community on a final design,'' he said.

The Transport Department will lodge an application with the Development Assessment Commission in the coming weeks. A community information session will be held Saturday, May 24, from 10am to 2pm at Black Forest Primary School, with street meetings the following week.

Feedback must be received by the department by June 6. A final design will be put out for further comment later this year.

Thanks for that link, Norman -- it covered a few of my questions.

It's a good concept render. I really do hope they pursue the 'artistic' element in the screen designs; the last thing we need is another bland piece of infrastructure. Melbourne's been quite good in recent years of making public art of infrastructure, and I hope that's a tendency that can be engendered here.

...and play classical music at a low level 24/7. This has been proven to rattle even the most persistent loiterers!

I wonder if the next budget announcement regarding trams is going to be another overpass like this over goodwood road and a bunch more trams to go with the grade separation (they could terminate after south road)
