I'll add stuff to this thread as I come across it. Not game to read this whole thing in a single sitting


Population Target - Increase permanent population of city to 26,000 by 2010. Increase overnight population to 34,000 by 2010. Both targets are double of the 2001 population figure.

End of June 2004: Permanent residents - 14,361 (+627 on 2003, +1,530 on 2001). Way behind target, however when you look at last year's increase compared to the prior years, the pace has improved dramatically. Estimated permanent population at beginning of March Quarter is 14,883 - so we're gathering some pace.

Total overnight population is 19,461.


Residential completions (number of dwellings built):

2001 - 377
2002 - 255
2003 - 185
2004 - 373
2005 (up to end March quarter) - 164


According to this pretty map, the vast majority of population growth has been in either North Adelaide or the southern half of Adelaide.


Workforce growth target - 111,000 wokers by 2010

2001 - 89,000 workers
2005 (end of March Quarter) - 95,429

Somehow I wondow if population growth in the CBD is dictated more or less by the supply of affordable accomodation. If this is the case and more accomodation does come online then people will move towards the CBD. If everything is too expensive, the opposite will happen. I guess it's stating the obvious. I'd love to see the percentage of vacant accomodation in the city.

Anyway nothing interesting happened at the meeting. The only notable thing was that the demolition of the tram barn was approved again. Apparently the developers had withdrawn their application at last fortnights meeting, but there was a mis-communication and the council approved it last fortnight. This week the council received the 'real' application, and they voted in favour of the demolition of the tram barn.

Lord Mayor's 12-month wish-list

CREATING new parklands and ensuring plans for the city's new bus station come to fruition are at the top of Michael Harbison's agenda for his bonus 12 months as Adelaide Lord Mayor.

Adelaide City councillors last week agreed to postpone the next election - scheduled for November - for 12 months to allow for a review into the possibility of returning to the wards representative system abolished in 1998.

Mr Harbison said there were many projects he wanted to pursue in his extra 12 months in office.

He wanted to see wasteland on the southern side of the River Torrens between the Morphett St bridge and the weir converted into parklands and was keen to see work begin on the bus station to replace the outdated Franklin St depot.

A push to get the planned King William St tramline built was also on his agenda.

"I want to see the tram extension go ahead and to make sure we get the right plan so that we get a result that doesn't (interfere with) traffic in King William St," he said.

Mr Harbison also wants to create a new parklands events space at the front of the Convention Centre and continue with upgrades to North Tce and Pulteney streets.

The council's extra 12 months has been criticised as undemocratic by the SA Federation of Residents and Ratepayers' Association.

However, Mr Harbison defended the move, saying ratepayers wanted a return to the wards system, under which councillors represent specific sections of the city.

Mr Harbison said a thorough review would not be possible without the extension.

"In my mind I was gearing up for the election (this November) but I'm doing my best to change gear and to get back to the business of running the city," he said.

State and Local Government Relations Minister Jennifer Rankine has said there would not be enough time for the review without delaying the election. Parliament must now change legislation for the postponement and review to go ahead.

I'm happy for that site to be parklands at the moment, so long as it doesn't get the same protection as the others around the city.

There wouldn't be too much demand for anything that they could build on it at the moment, but in say 10 years time, you would hope there would be.

A visionary developer or government could have a field day out there, making use of the Torrens and building over the railway lines ala Fed Square in Melbourne.

Article in today's Advertiser in the Review Section pages 4 & 5 had an interesting impression for a future Adelaide skyline. I like it when they come up with these every now and then. Hopefully I have posted this in the correct section. Here is a cropped version of the pic, sorry about the line down the middle but it was over 2 pages. Meant to be articles this comming week in the Advertiser realting to the Vision 2020, basically brings up a lot of issues already discussed on this forum, well today's article did anyway.

Yeah I saw this and had a bit of a chuckle! Looks like we have stolen Crown towers and FWP from Melbourne and changed the colours to disguise them.
I'm surprised that there is a render of an actual proposal here though. The "final" stage of the Skycity casino update was for a hotel of up to 27 levels to be built ontop of the casino. This is the render I saw ages ago, but as far as I can remember, the idea was put on the back burner until heritage matters with the existing building were sorted out.

btw, ive never heard of this proposed hotel. is it still a possibility?
personally, i think it would look a bit odd having it on top of the casino. i would prefer it on top of the festival centre carpark, or somewhere. but i'd have to see a proper rendering before i made up my mind

Yes, must admit I had a laugh when I saw the towers they shunted in there, Crown Towers jumped at me like a dog off a leash. Knew I had seen the FWP b4 but couldn't put finger on it till reading here.

Was also not aware of the 27level Skycity tower proposal, to be frank now would be a good time to put forward such a thing, given the current boom. Nice tower would look good there to join the Hyatt which is on it's lonesome a tad.
