Wow! Wow! Wow! Wouldn't it be great if we had Emirates A340s, Qantas 747s and a couple more Cathay Pacific, Malaysia Airlines and Singapore Airlines aircraft coming to the airport a lot more frequently. Damn it! If only I wasn't at school yesterday, I would have been down there straight away. Of course I wouldn't have enjoyed it as much as what I did when I spent 3 hours looking at aeroplanes in Sydney Kingsford-Smith Airport...
Anyway, it looks like there are some people that disagree with having large and impressive aircraft such as this person from Glenelg who wrote to Adelaide Now and said:
Being a resident of Glenelg North, I thought it was very inconsiderate to have all of those planes coming in all morning and roaring up the sky above. No doubt the airport will have made a killing out of the extra landing fees, and you can bet non of it will be seen by the neighboring house holds whose home values were sent plummeting!

For goodness sake!
I take back many of the things I said before 2010; particularly my anti-Rann rants. While I still maintain some of said opinions, I feel I could have been less arrogant. I also apologise to people I offended; while knowing I can't fully take much back. :)

I can't agree more. I live in the Modbury area and am sick of hearing from the nimby wingers who have built near the quarries winging about tucks, dust and noise. What did they expect? I often wonder if there is something medically/mentally wrong with these sort of people.

Well as you get older your cognitive abilities tend to decline.

Emirates at Adelaide's gate today. Is this a sign of things to come?

I know Sydney had fog this morning. Maybe it was the same yesterday (even in Melbourne?). When did the Emirates flight arrive, any idea? Maybe they are trying to get used to Adelaide for something in the not too distant future (hopefully). :)

Cheers

Yesterday was an unusual day regarding flight arrangements - I had a heck of a lot of Virgins/Qantas domestic carriers coming in right over the top of my house landing from the SE.

There really is no point for them to fly into Adelaide when most of their passengers are going to Sydney, and Sydney being the central hub for Australia will definitely have clear advantage over the number of airlines going through their airport.
Good point, however Sydney's Kingsford-Smith International Airport is only the central hub out of 'tradition'.
No, tradition has very little to do with it. It's the central hub because it serves Australia's largest city, so has the largest number of passengers flying direct.
Adelaide could easily became a cantral hub for Asian airlines because it is central to the other major cities of Australia -as I mentioned earlier. If our State Government, Qantas, Virgin Blue, JetStar and possibly Tiger Airways encourage this, it would prompt the airlines to do so. Why am I mentioning the major domestic airlines of Australia? Because if they organise codeshare agreements with these airlines, they could make a killing
No they couldn't.The economics of air travel are moving away from hub and spoke operation because it's just too expensive. Instead they fly to all the big destinations direct from their single operational hub in Asia (KL for Malaysia, HK for Cathay, etc). The big destinations still serve as hubs for the smaller destinations, but they no longer aggressively pursue the markets that require a connecting flight - instead they just accept that most passengers will be carried by the airlines that go there direct. There are exceptions when another large Australian city is on the way, but Adelaide is not very likely to be on the way to anywhere much. And of course the other exception is Qantas which has operational hubs in Australia, but I wouldn't be surprised if they eventually also start hubbing in Lhasa! That prediction is just speculation based on technical issues - I haven't heard any rumours.
AND it woudn't need aircraft for longer domestic routes such Sydney to Perth and Sydney to Darwin, both of which are closer to Adelaide than to Sydney.
Yes they would, as there are passengers going from Sydney to Perth and Sydney to Darwin. Diverting them via Adelaide wastes fuel, wastes time, and wastes money.
BTW, can anyone tell me what that diagonal strip of land which goes from Tapleys Hill Road down past West Beach Road and then becomes that Golf Course? In the street directory it says 'Federal Airports Corporation', but could anyone specify this and give some more information about it, because if our runway become over utilised, there's hardly any room for expansion.
I've heard it is for emergency evacuation purposes, but I don't have any details.

And if our runway ever becomes overutilized, we can build another airport. I seem to recall they set aside land for this purpose near Two Wells. The intention then was to replace Adelaide Airport if it no longer served the city's needs, but a more likely outcome is that it will provide an alternative, in the same way that Melbourne has Avalon and Brisbane has Sunshine Coast and Coolangatta airports.

I don't know if fuel price could ever justify a central/ hub airport as the fuel required for take off of (local/ shuttle run) aircraft would negate the savings of bringing bulk international flights into a central/ hub point.

Also, if there were to be an Australian hub airport, wouldn't it be best placed in Darwin?

Another visit by Emirates. This is becoming a regular occurrence isn't it...

Maybe we should expect an announcement soon.

Unless it has "Special" or "Sorry, No Pick Up" on the nose LED display.
