IIRC the playing fields that are currently in the middle of Victoria Park, for all intents and purposes, belong to PAC. So as long as this plan doesn't amount to "Let's build a premium soccerfield for my old school" ...

The Adelaide City Council last night endorsed the master plan, at a cost of nearly $13 million.

The plan includes restoring the heritage grandstand and building a community plaza.

The ticket booth and wrought iron entrance gates will remain.

Lord Mayor Michael Harbison says old infrastructure from the South Australia Jockey Club will go.

"This means the community will see a demolition of the old racing buildings, the rails around the track and the work towards the establishment of wetlands and a lot of community resources, playing fields and so on very soon now," he said.

They should be building a outdoor venue for concerts at Victoria Park aswell, similar to the Sidney Myer Music Bowl in Melbourne.

yes - some sort of amphitheatre would be great! but perhaps better positioned as a part of an integrated Entertainment Precinct...

This "master Plan" is the most boring plan i have ever seen, complete joke.
How about something new and exciting, the Sidney Myer music bowl is a great example of whats needed there. I emailed the council about that, and all i got back is "we are happy with the plans"

One day this council will get some balls and make a good decision for a change!

Man, the whinging on here is getting hard to take. Everybody wants everything to bring hundreds of people into the city, but you seem to forget that some basic infrastructure is also needed. Sports fields are needed. Playgrounds are needed. By the people who live in the area. Wetlands are needed. Would you like the sports fields and parks where you live to removed so that somebody's idea of what they would like to see there can be realised? A music bowl is a great idea, by why on earth would you want it at the southeast residential corner of the city? Like Wayno said, put it closer to the entertainment precinct - if the Festival Centre Plaza and surrounds can get re-vamped into a Fed Square type drawcard, then Elder Park would be the place for a music bowl, not Victoria Park.

Covers come on for the Clipsal 500

There may just be under 100 days left to the 2009 Clipsal 500 Adelaide but the work going on behind the scenes on the $20 million upgrade are in full swing. Workers have already laid the foundations for the new temporary pit building and massive undercover structure for the main grandstand which is one of the biggest the biggest temporary structure of its type in the world.

Was down at the building site today and got some snaps of the construction - on the article page. Looks very nice and the sheer size of the structure is really impressive

Driving past Victoria Park this morning I noticed the Horse Track Railing has mostly been removed. I must say it looks much better with it gone. You can actually see across the entire parkland now!

Simply STUNNING!!! Did we expect anything else honestly. I'm sure we can look forward to some new trees and Grass as part of the "Bold" Victoria Square proposal too. I'm so sick of things not being done properly. If you can't afford to do it properly put it on hold until you can! Stop this band aid job of every single project the council touches: grote street upgrade, North terrace upgrade, rundle street upgrade, victoria park, victoria square. JUST BITE THE BULLET and do it properly in it's entirety the FIRST TIME!!!!

Victoria Park plan flop

VICTORIA Park’s long-awaited multi-million overhaul will likely be pruned to “grass and trees” after Town Hall dipped out on federal funding to help transform the former racetrack into a people’s park.

Lord Mayor Michael Harbison told the City Messenger this week the City Council had failed in its bid to secure $16 million from the Federal Government’s $550 million community infrastructure program.

“They said they’d run out of money in that particular program and had no money for Victoria Park,” he said.

Town Hall’s masterplan, announced in August last year and aimed at turning the 72 ha east parklands site into “one of the great urban parks of the world”, featured a plaza, wetlands, walking and bike trails, sports fields and a refurbished heritage grandstand.

The council set aside $4 million of its own money for the project, but budgeted for the remaining $12 million to be funded externally. “To get the whole thing done was on the assumption we’d get some help,” Mr Harbison said.

“But the broad strokes of it, which is the grass and trees, we can and will do just as soon as the SAJC is out of the way.

“$4 million means grass and trees but puts on the backburner too many buildings and so on.”

The City Council originally bid for $4 million from the Federal Government’s Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program.

However, it upped its bid to $16 million the entire cost of the Victoria Park project in February when the fund was increased from $50 million to $550 million as part of the economic stimulus package.

Mr Harbison said the City Council would not seek private funding and also was unlikely to ask for State Government help.

“Our big focus where we hope to work with the State Government is Victoria Square,” he said.

Public consultation late last year revealed a clear majority of residents supported the City Council’s plan for Victoria Park, with only 16 per cent opposing it.

Meantime, the clean-up at Victoria Park is running months behind schedule.

As part of its agreement to leave the former racecourse, the South Australian Jockey Club (SAJC) agreed to pay for the demolition of the non-heritage grandstand, stables and the jockey and stewards rooms as well as the removal of track railings and judges towers.

In December last year, Town Hall said it expected work would start in January and take about three months.

Mr Harbison said there had been delays, but he was confident the park would be cleared by next month.

“It’s back on track again now, the SAJC has got a new contractor and the new board are keen to make a good impression so things are looking up there,” he said.

The post-Clipsal 500 clean-up has also taken longer than expected, with the last remnants of the V8 Supercar racetrack expected to be removed by next week.

I disagree.

There are many projects that are of much higher priority on the shelf at the moment. What happened to the North Terrace upgrade project? How about some work on our premiere cultural boulevard before we build yet another park for dog walking?
