Is that arrow to Hindmarsh lit up or am I imagining this? A great feature if this is for night road use.

It is lit - I think the intention was to allow an extra right turn lane to Anzac Hwy for the morning peak.

That's correct - it's electronic so they can show a variable message.

The are used in Sydney around the place - particularly at tunnel approaches - but they seem to fail quite regularly and thus leave no indication of which lane goes where

Thanks for that guys - I have not yet seen such in Bris. so was not sure. Interesting results if they fail no doubt!

Also noted the heavy bar across the road to carry the signs. Adelaide held out against such signage for years while the east had heaps. At the same time the large green background signs were resisted in favour of the old white corner signposts right up into the nineties. All about visual pollution you know. Who cares about safety, ease of sign identification and losing your bearings. !think safety and knowing where you are going is more significant that that kind of
resistance.

B'bane also has VERY large rectangular led signs hanging right across the road - with such ideas as..save our water, phone numbers etc.

If I recall correctly, the tram overpass was to be built concurrently with the underpass, to avoid a new round of
disruption to traffic & local residents, but no sign of the overpass - has it been deferred / abandoned?

Bit of a short walk.

The Grahame Farmer Freeway (GFF) and Narrows Bridge projects in Perth also had public open days prior to their opening and were well attended. The twin tunnels of the GFF provided over 3km of pure tunnel to walk through.

If there's an open day for the New Northern Gateway project that will be a long all dayer for anyone keen enough to walk the full distance of both carriageways. That's for the extra hard core road geeks only or perhaps the pushie.

Final asphalting is now occurring on the Northern side of the underpass. This should be done by next week. The new signals on the eastern side of Anzac Highway (ie where the new Northbound on and off ramps will be) have now also been set up, ready to be used when the slip lanes open.

SOUTH ROAD NORTHERN PLANNING STUDY APPROVED

The Australian Government has given the go ahead to start a $4.5 million planning study to identify the preferred route for the north-south corridor along South Road between the Port River Expressway and Grand Junction Road.

Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Anthony Albanese, said the planned north-south corridor in Adelaide is a significant transport initiative that will help to meet the arterial road network demands for freight and passenger vehicles.

"The north-south movement of people and goods between Darlington and Wingfield is one of the most important components of the road transport system in metropolitan Adelaide," Mr Albanese said.

"As well as reducing congestion, this link provides connections to the major intermodal transport hubs of Adelaide Airport, Port Adelaide, Outer Harbor and the Islington Rail Terminal, as well as providing access to the bulk of Adelaides industry activity in the north-west.

"The upgrade of this section of South Road will also improve road safety and deliver environmental benefits by reducing stop-start travel.

"The Government's planning study is part of the $12.6 million brought forward in the May 2008 Federal Budget to make an early start on planning works on South Road," Mr Albanese said.

South Australian Minister for Transport, Patrick Conlon, said the upgrade will create a non-stop two-kilometre corridor along the existing alignment of South Road, utilising grade separation at South Terrace, the Wingfield railway line, Cormack Road and Grand Junction Road.

"The planning study will be undertaken by a group of specialist planning consultants, consisting of Connell Wagner, QED and GHD, and will be completed by April 2010," Mr Conlon said.

"The section of South Road from Grand Junction Road to the Port River Expressway currently experiences significant traffic delays with the longest occurring at the intersection with Grand Junction Road.

"Current daily traffic volumes on this section of South Road range from 35,000 vehicles per day (north of Grand Junction Road), to 47,000 vehicles per day (south of Grand Junction Road).

"Commercial vehicles comprise some 15-18 per cent of this traffic," Mr Conlon said.

Mr Albanese said the Australian Government will provide $500 million in funding between now and 2014 towards construction of South Road flyovers at the major bottlenecks at Grand Junction Road; Cormack Road and the Wingfield railway line; and Sturt Road.

The Australian Government commitment includes $70 million to plan for a traffic light free road all the way from the Southern Expressway to the Port River Expressway.

Am I the only one who thinks that this is a complete waste of money? $4.5M 'planning study' to determine the blindingly obvious? I can understand $4.5M for the whole length of South road, but for only a 2 km stretch that already has a massive, mostly empty stretch of land on its western edge, this is ludicrous.

Drilling rigs have been set up between the train line and PRExy for the last 3 days. May have something to do with the study.
