The University was built over 30 years ago, and Tech Park about 20 years ago - do you expect them to be moved? The railway has been there even longer, and Aiden has given reasons for it's non-shift. Remember Mawson Lakes was built by Delfin and was basically built as a car-oriented suburb, not a TOD. Firstly there's nothing wrong with building the town centre to be close to the uni. It has the uni at one end and the station at the other (still to be developed) end - there's nothing wrong with that. Secondly, I don't know why they chose to put the uni (or the SAIT, as it originally was) in the middle of nowhere, but I'm guessing they wanted somewhere that was walkable both from Main North Road and Green Fields station. Anyway, construction of Technology Park meant that it didn't stay the middle of nowhere, and now it's right next to the middle of somewhere!

Keep in mind that the Mawson Interchange wasn't proposed until about 2003/04 and wasn't originally intended to be built when Mawson Lakes began development. As already stated, it doesn't make sense to put the station underground, considering that doing so would add unnecessary cost with little benefit. The town centre is still a fair distance from the train station, but it has been developing north along Main Street towards it since it opened.ozisnowman wrote:Mawson Lakes whilst ok, could have been a lot lot better. It would be possible to achieve something similar, although not very likely.

Thanks for the map Will. I used to pass through Mawson Lakes on a near daily basis so I could easily keep up with what's going on, but these days it's a bit far away...
So with that in mind, would anyone be able to provide us with a quick update on the following buildings 5 levels and over going up in Mawson Lakes, as well as any others I've missed. Have I got all of them on the correct place on the map? It's hard to tell when Google Maps doesn't have half of these streets.

AtD with all those bldgs you gave renders/pics of, it sure is'nt just another suburb - esp. in Adelaide. They seem to have broken the hitherto impenetrable 2 floor level for height that reigned over the suburbs till recent times - just take a look at how uniformly flat the built environment of the Adel. plains is. It's a great change to see that this is altering in so many areas. Ie. Pt Adelaide, West Lakes, Glenelg, Darlington area and here - even evidence at Plympton.

Adelaide north i.e Mawson lakes has gone the way of many satelite suburbs around Australia, Secondary CBD's are all over the place these days, such as Paramatta and Liverpool in Sydney, Dandenong in Victoria, Goldcoast and Cains in Qld.
Adelaide is setting its self up with Mawson lakes to have a secondary option to Adelaide CBD to grow business, with the ability to live in a CBD style environment with larger living space and the flexability of medium to high density dwellings.
The second thing Mawson lakes offers that no other standard metropolitan suburb apart from the ones mentioned in other states and Glenelg is the ability to have high rise top quality Hotels. Only Adelaide CBD and Glenelg offer these in Adelaide and now Mawson Lakes can join in with the up and coming completion of the New Quest Apartments, and the New to be started Cascades Hotel.
M/Lakes as us die hard locals call it lol- is deffinatly heading in the right direction for a fully sustainable Multi funtion Polis society (be that you agree with this statement or not - basically it is), combining: work, leasure, environment all under one roof.
And with the future plans for a new subdivision at dry creek and the removal of the salt plans and the creation of the new Northern connector to run off the currently being built northern expressway, Mawson lakes as a suburb will be a force to be reconned with. Watch this space people.

Hello King_Kong - paint me paranoid but all your 8 posts here have been big-upping Mawson Lakes. You've claimed "insider info' a couple of times. Are your posts informative insider info, or marketing? That last one was a bit aspirational, there's a fair bit of negativity being directed at the salt lakes plan as an example of a public transport starved, car dependent, ghetto development. Which indeed Mawson lakes was until the buses were improved and the train station built.
Exit on the right in the direction of travel.

Took a walk around da hood this arvo, here are some pics. These are my first development pics, so don't kick me hard 
This is the HMH tower -- almost finished, looks like some internal grooming still going on, no tenants at the moment. Saw a couple of suits today at the entrance discussing lease of the retail space downstairs.



This is some lively colored building adjacent HMH on the corner of Garden Tce and Metro Pde.

Still further down Metro Pde towards the I/change... I think the brown details on white facade look good.


This is the site of future Fusion development in Euston walk.


On the other side of I/C there is a number of developments going on.

Lot 47 was getting its foundation today.


Another development -- Maxx apartments (never heard of them before).


On the other side of the ditch some earthmoving going on.


Other developments (the nice office project, Spire, Lot 301 (electra), Icon and the Sanctuary) are still waiting to emerge.
Although Park-and-Ride is proving popular, there's definitely not enough parking space, so cars are being dumped everywhere, forming some pretty ugly patches of lawn.

Thanks for the photos, they really need to invest more money for the Park and Ride or encourage more to use the existing bus services (or introduce a Roam Zone).

The issue with car parking has started to become a problem at a lot of places in the last 24 months I reckon. Oaklands is now FULL during the day, despite the huge number of parks provided, hallett cove beach has been overflowing as well.
Is there room at mawson lakes to expand the carpark? There is room at oaklands.

There is plenty of room around the I/C right now, but it gets slowly chewed away by new developments. thanks for the photos Mr MO. Well Im happily fascinated by all the med density housing in what is just a middle suburb in the middle of no-where. This should be seen as a catalyst for more housing like this over Adelaide. OK the buildings arent architectural marvels, but compared to the endless mcmansions in new subdivisions, these apartments are far better. I wouldnt have any hesitations about buying one of these as an investment, as they're not overpriced like at newport quays. Once the street trees grow, and the shops are all tennanted, and the revamp of the Gawler train line, I reckon it would be a great little TOD community to live in. They're obviously in demand as seen by the amount of them being built, and none of them are lakefront. I cant wait to see what that area is like in 10 years time.
