The Whitmore Square affordable eco-housing project has a 6-page write-up in the current issue of Architecture Australia. The author (Rachel Hurst from UniSA's architecture school) spends quite a bit of time discussing it in terms of Le Corbussier's Unité d'Habitation, both how it reflects and differs from that 60 year old model.

I'm not a fan of these low-rise Mawson Fakes like buildings in the CBD.
I guess they add residents, but something greater than 10 floors would be better

I wonder what the ACCs long term intent is with Hindley St? will it retain its status as Adelaide's late night entertainment strip? Maybe i'm paranoid but won't apartments such as these add pressure to the call for reducing opening hours? and maybe even a call for reducing noise levels after midnight?Ben wrote:Type: Application Assessed on Merit

of course it will - it will give them a source of revenue.
It is fairly typical local government planning (or lack thereof)
perhaps the State Government needs to assign an "entertainment" precinct in the city which can't have residential directly in it to avoid conflicting needs

It's interesting to observe the outcomes that arise out of development and planning decisions such as this.
If a developer identifies that there is the demand and potential to develop residential buildings in a high-activity entertainment precinct, that's all and well, but the residents moving in shouldn't really be given the rights to complain, nor expect too much from the council in the way of noise concerns at night. Those people made that choice to live in those premises and the surrounding environment, and thus should put up and shut up with it.
For the record, I live near a train line. Sure the noise bothers me sometimes, but I understand that I shouldn't complain about, because I chose to live there. Same principle applies. If one was really bothered, they should move! Can't have your cake and eat it too.
